Study ofTi44by theCa40(α,γ)Ti44Reaction

Abstract
The Ca40(α,γ)Ti44 reaction has been used to study the nucleus Ti44. The mass excess of Ti44 has been determined to be -37 541 ± 10 keV. Radiative yields and angular distributions of deexcitation γ rays from resonances at 4.22-, 4.26-, and 4.52-MeV α energy, and angular distributions of γ rays between bound levels have been measured using Ge(Li) detectors. Bound states have been found at 1083 (2+), 1905 (0+), 2454 (4+), 2531 (2+), 2886 (2+), 3175, 3415 (2, 3), 3645 and 3942 keV, and mixing ratios and branching ratios for the decays of some of these levels are reported. The ground state and first excited 2+ and 4+ states can be explained in terms of (fp)4 configurations. Some of the other low-energy states probably require interpretation in terms of particle-hole configurations. Relative reduced E2 transition strengths from the 2531-keV (2+) state are determined and suggest that the 1905- and 2531-keV states may be the beginning of a rotational band.
