Abstract
The increasing use of liposomes in biology and medicine has prompted a rigorous characterization of both classical multilamellar vesicle and novel liposome preparations. Drug delivery applications of liposomes or liposomes as immunological adjuvants have necessitated the production of large quantities of defined phospholipids of high purity, prompting a similar intensification of research. The growing interest in liposomes can be attributed to three major perspectives: (1) physicists and physical chemists take an interest in liposomes as a system in which forces between amphiphilic molecules can be studied; (2) biochemists, biophysicists, and scientists in related areas consider the liposome to be an appropriate model for biological membranes; (3) scientists in other disciplines including pharmaceutical and agricultural industries are interested in the potential use of liposomes as carriers (vehicles) for the application of drugs, vaccines, insecticides, fertilizers, and genetic materials. The growing interest of industries has promoted the production of specific instrumentation for the scaleup of liposome production.
