HMOs and pediatric emergency care

Abstract
In 1984, recipients of Aid to Families of Dependent Children in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, were assigned to health maintenance organizations (HMOs). Difficulties in delivering quality pediatric emergency care were associated with this HMO assignment process. Three pediatric emergency cases are presented to illustrate these difficulties. Suggestions for maintaining high quality pediatric emergency care for health maintenance organization patients who are recipients of Aid to Families of Dependent Children are presented.
