Abstract
The nucleotide sequence of the region between the genes for the large subunit of ribulose-l,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase and the β subunit of coupling factor from tobacco chloroplast DNA has been determined. The 5′ ends of their mRNAs have been located on the DNA sequence using S1 nuclease mapping. The promoter sequences of these chioroplast genes have features in common with those of prokaryotes. E. coli RNA polymerase can recognize these sequences and start transcription at authentic initiation sites. Keywords
