Teaching Social Work Students about Computers

Abstract
The application of computer technology to the human service field is increasing. Yet there is little evidence that social work educators adequately prepare their students to work with such technology. This paper outlines the rationale, development, and content of a course for social work students which introduces them to some aspects of computer logic and techniques relevant to social welfare practice. The aim of the course is to demystify computer technology as well as to increase students’ understanding of computers. It is contended that a critical appraisal of the technology’s potential use in social welfare practice is best achieved by social work students themselves, in the course of their practical experience with computers.
