Abstract
Exact, positive definite expressions both in power series and in closed form are derived for the potential energy density in a continuously stratified incompressible fluid. They are useful for determining the energy of large displacements or mixing processes in regions of rapidly varying buoyancy frequency, such as a sharp pycnocline. Keywords
