Abstract
Computer experiments are used to study the phase diagram of an array of interacting classical quadrupoles on a plane triangular lattice. Careful analysis of variously defined order parameters corroborates the mean-field prediction of multiple phase transitions, but defect formation prevents observation of the highly anisotropic intermediate phase on a macroscopic scale. Keywords
