A mass spectrometric study of small aluminum clusters formed by a single-state free-jet expansion

Abstract
Small Aln clusters (n≤6) formed in a free-jet expansion were observed. Species of n>2 have never been observed above a Knudsen cell by mass spectrometry. Since the pressure of the Al vapor in the crucible was found to be subsaturated, a heterogeneous nucleation mechanism is proposed.
