Abstract
Total laryngectomy was done in 87 dogs and various methods were employed for a larynx substitute. The best functioning sphincter or valve was the surgical reconstruction of the cricopharyngeus muscle about a collapsible first tracheal ring. The dog with a sphincter or valve appeared to have good function for deglutition, airway and bark. The successful results represented by survival to 4 1/2 months should be observed for stability of function over a long period. Keywords
