IS THE EPILEPTIC A SAFE MOTOR VEHICLE DRIVER?

Abstract
The material in this discussion is based on a detailed questionnaire sent to members of the American Chapter of the International League Against Epilepsy, and from whom 127 answers were received. With this, the authors have endeavored to set a standard to be used in determining whether people with epilepsy should drive. It is believed that patients afflicted with epilepsy should not be permitted to drive unless seizure-free for 3 yrs. Other syndromes where there are lapses of consciousness should be treated in a similar manner, except that the license can be restored at an earlier period when the spells are under medical control. Nocturnal seizures or an aura are not safety factors. The diagnosis of epilepsy should be made on clinical grounds, using the E.E.G. only to supplement the clinical diagnosis.
