Direct Transformation of Nitroalkanes to Alkanoic Acids Under Mild Conditions

Abstract
Basic phosphate buffered (pH=11) potassium permanganate rapidly converts primary nitroalkanes (7 examples) into alkanoic acids in high yield and under mild conditions. The procedure tolerates the presence of ester, amide, primary alcohol and tetrahydropyranyl ether groups in the starting nitroalkane.
