Abstract
[CONTINUED) To the Editor: The number of letters in the July 29 issue of the Journal concerning radioactivity in cigarette smoke attests to a wide interest in carcinogens in tobacco.1 The hypothesis we proposed,2 which was subsequently extended by others,3 , 4 has been largely ignored or misunderstood. Our original measurements of alpharadiation activity in bronchial tissues5 were somewhat crude, but the finding of higher concentrations of 210Po at bronchial bifurcations in smokers has been supported by the results of studies in which better measurement techniques were used.4 , 6 The "hot particle" question reviewed by both the International Commission on Radiological Protection . . .Keywords
