Finite Element Formulation and Solution of Contact-Impact Problems in Continuum Mechanics - IV

Abstract
In Section 1, theory and algorithms for large displacement contact- impact analysis in two dimensions (i.e. plane stress, plane strain and axisymmetric) are presented. The theory encompasses a wide range of contact- impact problems and allows for a completely arbitrary contact surface development, stick, slip and frictional sliding conditions, and impact-release conditions covering the full range of contact possibilities. Section 2 describes some new developments regarding the Hertzian algorithm. Section 3 contains sample problems which employ the algorithms described in Section 1 and also some studies involving the Hertzian algorithm. Anticipating the need for an efficient shell element for crash configuration modelling, the authors have performed a pilot study of a plate bending element. The results of this study, which are encouraging, are contained in Section 4.
