Species Identification of Invasive Aspergillosis in Man

Abstract
Species identification of the aspergilli responsible for human invasive aspergillosis has been accomplished in 39 patients who had cultural and histopathologic identification of the Aspergillus infections at autopsy. Fifty-nine per cent of the patients had infections caused by A. fumigatus; 31% of the infections were caused by A. flavits; 5% were due to members of the A. glaucits group. An additional 5% of patients had infections with two species of Aspergillus simultaneously. Forty-two per cent of the patients who had A. flavus infections had pathologic lesions of either the palate or the epiglottis, or both, and evidence is presented to suggest that A. flavus may be the leading cause of invasive upper airway aspergillosis.
