DIFFERENTIAL TWINNING IN ISRAELI MAJOR ETHNIC GROUPS

Abstract
Modan, B., (Tel Hashomer Hosp., Israel) H. Kaliner, M. Modan and L Nemser. Differential twinning in Israeli major ethnic groups. Amer. J. Epid. 1968, 88: 189–194.—All records of Jewish live births in Israel for the 4-year period 1961–1964 were searched for twins and information supplemented by hospital and Central Population Registry data. There were 1, 769 pairs of twins, yielding a rate of 9.7 per 1,000 births. Of these, the estimated Monozygotic (MZ) rate was 3.8 and of Dizygotic (DZ) 5.9. Comparison between Occidental and Oriental mothers of the age-specific rates revealed a higher rate (10.4/1,000 births) among the Oriental than among the Occidental (8.9). The excess in the Oriental group is attributed to DZ twins (6.5/1,000 versus 4.7); the rates of MZ twins do not differ markedly. The rate of DZ Occidental twins reaches the expected peak in the 35–39 group, while among Oriental mothers an earlier peak is noticed. No age dependence was noted among MZ Occidental twins; among the Oriental groups there is a sharp rise after the age of 40, similar in its pattern to the one previously described among U.S. Negroes.
