Abstract
Mandibular gland secretions of the ants A. fulva Roger and X. floridanus Emery contain methyl anthranilate. Behavioral tests demonstrate that it initiates escape behavior in the workers of each species. The evolutionary significance of methyl anthranilate in myrmicine species is discussed. Keywords
