Abstract
Results are presented from a study of the experiences of families in which mothers terminated a pregnancy following detection of a serious defect in the fetus. Responses indicate that even very young children and those sheltered from knowledge of the event showed reactions to their parents' distress and maternal absence. Younger children may experience particular difficulties in coping with complete information about such a complex decision. Recommendations are made for social work service before, during, and after hospitalization for the pregnancy termination. Keywords
