Penicillin and Caries Activity

Abstract
In vitro studies showed that 10 U. of penicillin interfered with carbohydrate fermentation in saliva-glucose mixtures. In vivo studies with a mouthwash containing 1000 U. of penicillin demonstrated that the capacity of saliva to ferment carbohydrates is eliminated for several hrs. following the use of the penicillin mouthwash. In a controlled animal expt. the brushing of penicillin mixtures on hamsters'' teeth virtually prevented dental caries. The findings offer evidence that the fermentation of carbohydrates by oral microorganisms is important in the etiology of dental caries.
