Degenerative Changes in a Soft Hydrophilic Contact Lens

Abstract
A soft hydrophilic contact lens, worn constantly for 13 months, was removed from a patient following a mucopurulent conjunctivitis. Examination of the lens by electron microscopy showed cracks and crevices on the inner surface of the lens, many of which contained necrotic epithelium and oval/round organisms; the outer surface of the lens was smooth. The possible aetiology of these findings, together with the case report, aredescribed and discussed.
