Superposition of Arteriolar Vasomotion Waves and Regulation of Blood Flow in Skeletal Muscle Microcirculation

Abstract
The delivery of oxygen from the blood to the tissues is a complex process involving several factors, which ensure adequate oxygen supply to the cell metabolic demands. Tissue oxygenation is deeply affected by the distribution of blood in the arteriolar and capillary network. Many evidences indicate that in the striated muscle the capillary perfusion is inhomogeneous, because velocity of red blood cells, number of red blood cells per unit length of capillary (or capillary hematocrit) and the density of perfused capillaries vary to a considerable extent (Tyml, 1987). It has been shown that these parameters depend on vascular tone, indicating that the arteriolar vessels play a key role in the regulation of muscle perfusion (Tyml, 1987).
