Abstract
Function Description Language (FDL) is a design language which features an English-like syntax. It can be applied at the conceptual stage of mechanical design to describe functions of the elements in a preliminary design. From these description structural information can be deduced and analyzed. Based upon the suggestion and recommendations provided by the system, improvement can be made by the designer such that layout of the product can be simplified and rationalized. Keywords
