Some Aspects of Hip Dysplasia and Coxa Plana in Dogs*

Abstract
Abstract— A total of ninety‐nine dogs, both healthy and with hip dysplasia and coxa plana, have been used for the studies performed up to the present. The findings were assessed by histological, histochemical and roentgenological methods and by means of OTC bone labelling, microradiography and autoradiography.In the hip dysplasia studies, changes were established first in the areas of ossification of the acetabulum and the growth plate of the femoral head but not in the capsule and lig. teres. Changes involving degeneration and even destruction of articular cartilage were encountered in older dogs in which dysplasia was also demonstrable roentgenologically. These dogs also showed changes in the capsule and lig. teres.In the initial phase of coxa plana, degenerative changes were established both in the metaphysial region and in the epiphysis in association with growth plate. A structureless mass was seen especially in the proximal part of the growth plate. Degeneration was intensified in a later phase of the disease and was followed by regeneration.As changes have been demonstrated above all in bone, the experiments continue as more extensive systematic studies of the influence of hormonal provocation on litters of experimental dogs. It is, consequently, still too early to draw conclusions.Résumé— Quatre vingt dix‐neuf chiens au total, tous sains mais ayant une dysplasie de la hanche, ou une coxa plana, ont fait l'objet de cette étude. Les resultats furent confirmés par des coupes histologiques, et par la radiographic Dans les cas de dysplasie de la hanche nos recherches ont démontrées que les zones d'ossification se font dam l'acétabulum, les points de croissance, mais pas dans la capsule ni sur le ligament rond. Des dégénérescences, et même parfois des destructions, furent observées sur les cartilages articulaires des chiens plus agés. Car la radiographie, nous fumes démontrés des altérations portant sur la capsule et le ligament rond.Au stage du début des coxoplana, des dégénérescences furent démontrées tant sur les diaphyses et les épiphyses. Une masse informe était vue sur l'extrémité proxinde des points de croissance.La dégénérescence allait en s'aggravant a un stage ultérieur de la maladie, mais était suivie par une régénération.Ces changements ont été obseréb essentiellement sur les os; les expériences se poursuivent pour étudier l'action des hormones sur les futures générations de chiens expérimentaux. Il est donc trop tôt pour tirer des conclusions.Zusammenfassung— Wir benutzten ein Material von 99 Hunden, die teilweise gesund waren und teilweise an Hüftdysplasie oder Coxa plana litten, als Grundlage für were Untersuchungen, die die Histologie, die Histochemie, die Röntgenologie, die OTC Knochenmarkierung, die Mikroradiographie und die Autoradiographie umfassten.Bei dem Studium der Hüftdysplasie fiel zunächst die Störung der Ossifikation im Gebiet des Acetabulums und der Wachstumszone im Femorkopf auf, während die Gelenkkapsel und das Ligamentum teres unverändert war. Degeneration und destruktive Prozesse im Gelenkknorpel wurde an älteren Hunden gesehen, die auch im Röntgenbild typische Dysplasie zeigten. Solche Hunde zeigten auch Veränderungen der Gelenkkapsel und des Ligamentum teres.Im Anfangsstadium der Coxa plana wurden degenerative Veränderungen in der Metaphyse und in der Wachstumszone der Epiphyse gefunden. Eine strukturlose Masse war besonders im proximalen Part der Wachstumszone offenbar. Im Spätstadium der Erkrankung sah man verstärkte Degeneration die von regenerativen Erscheinungen gefolgt war.Da die Veränderungen im wesentlichen im Kaochen gefunden wurden, ist a notwendig weitere systematische Untersuchungen anzustellen, um den Einfluss von Hormonen auf den Nachwuchs von Versuchstieren zu studieren. Es ist demgemäss verfrüht endgültige Rückschlüsse zu ziehen.
