Seasonal Pattern of Fructosan in Orchardgrass Stubble as Influenced by Nitrogen and Harvest Management1

Abstract
Synopsis: Soluble carbohydrate in orchardgrass, as indicated by fructosan, decreased rapidly during the period of maximum vegetative development—maximum stem elongation and seed head development—indicating that this was a critical period for management. In each of 4 cuttings, fructosan was reduced by increments of N. Large N applications render orchardgrass susceptible to injury, but the combination of high temperature and low soil moisture cause it.
