Correlation of Otosclerosis of the Crura and Footplate

Abstract
IT IS GENERALLY believed that otosclerosis involves the posterior footplate and posterior crus far less frequently than the anterior portion of the footplate and anterior crus. This study was undertaken to determine the extent and location of otosclerotic involvement of the stapes, footplate, and crura. Correlation of footplate otosclerosis with the degree of crural involvement was studied. Also, it was necessary to know if the otosclerosis seen in vivo was an accurate description of the extent of the otosclerotic process or if histologic examination was necessary to delineate the true extent of otosclerosis. Materials and Methods Specimens were collected consisting of stapes crura and footplate fragments from 100 consecutive cases from ward and private stapedectomy operations.
