Abstract
Nine patients suffering from diabetic retinopathy were given extended treatment with trihydroxyethylrutoside (THR), a substance of the group of flavonoids. The action of THR on capillaries was studied by measuring repeatedly, before and during treatment, the conjunctiva capillary resistance and the permeability of the blood-aqueous barrier. Seven patients showed a significant increase of the conjunctiva capillary resistance and in all 9, the per -meability of the blood-aqueous barrier was significantly lowered. Administration of THR consequently seems to be useful in diabetic retinopathy provided it takes place at an early stage of the illness and during considerable time. Keywords
