Abstract
This article examines the impact of the major trade liberalisation that has been introduced in Mexico since the mid‐1980s on efficiency in the manufacturing sector. Alternative indicators of efficiency are estimated and changes in these indicators are explained by regression analysis, including various measures of the degree of liberalisation. The conclusion is that thus far liberalisation has had a positive, but relatively weak effect on performance. Keywords
