Abstract
There is need for a new direction: a new politics of ecology to solve environmental problems. The older politics of conservation, often sincere but sometimes used as a lever to political success, was concerned with local, piecemeal efforts to preserve enclaves of natural beauty, mainly as tourist attractions. There is renewed interest in the Congress of the United States in conservation and environment, yet present party and legislative systems are not adequate for the task. Legislators are selected to represent a certain locale and present‐day technology‐related problems know no territorial bounds. New questions must be asked about our cities: are they obsolete? Each “ecocidal crisis” is interconnected with all the others and none can be solved in isolation. In order to solve environmental problems of the future, massive amounts of information must be available to the public and technology must be put to work on comprehensive new communications systems in order to bring the citizen back into the decision‐making process. Keywords
