Abstract
A constituent velocity equation has been formulated in the form of a differential equation pertinent to any type of mass transport experiment on self-polymerizing systems. When frontal gel filtration is employed, the equation can be written in terms of the constituent elution velocity and simplifies to a first-order linear differential equation, which permits accurate and rapid analysis of reversibly polymerizing systems. Using this equation, the association-dissociation reaction of a human erythrocyte membrane glycoprotein in 1% SDS solution has been analyzed and its main features (association constants and distribution profiles of oligomers) clarified. For comparison, the binding parameters pertaining to this system have also been analyzed by Steiner's treatment.
