Abstract
The effects of 2000 r of x-rays on the vascular system of the left hind limbs of 3-week- and 12-week-old mice are described. Arteriograms show a reduction in the efficiency of the larger irradiated vessels in conducting blood during the period 13 weeks to 87 weeks after irradiation. The degree of impairment of function varied, and in some cases was sufficient to cause severe ischaemia with subsequent necrosis of the lower part of the limb. It is suggested that radiation-induced fibrosis of the surrounding tissues causes loss of efficiency in the larger vessels at least by exerting pressure on them. The resultant reduction in flow could lead to further loss of efficiency owing to proliferation of the intima and further reduction in the size of the lumen. Some confirmation of this has been observed histologically.
