Abstract
Neutron inelastic scattering experiments have been carried out to determine the energies and widths of the crystal-field splittings of the 4I9/2 ground-state multiplet of the Nd3+ ion in NdS and NdSe. The energy-level sequence is derived from the observed crystal-field transition peak intensities. The resulting crystal-field parameters are qualitatively discussed. Keywords
