Abstract
A stress strain analysis of skin was made using a specially constructed extensometer. The curve relating extension and load was analysed and characterized by 2 mathematical equations. The constants describing the 2nd phase of extension varied with age. The collagen content of the skin (dry weight) was constant with age. The variation in skin tension, determined by retraction of inch squares cut from the body, was greater in the direction of Langer''s lines than across them. It may vary with age but was thought to be related more to obesity than to any other single factor. Keywords
