Abstract
An analysis of aggregate data concerning 2 450 cantons demonstrates considérable variation in relations between religious practice, social stratification and political behavior. Construction of a typology which combines analytical criteria and descriptive variables, leading to six types of relations. Triple conclusion : (1) the departement as a unit of analysis is fallacious ; electoral maps therefore allow only a superfidal observation of the phenomena ; (2) the individual described by stratified surveys is a statistical abstraction which does not take into account thé social context ; (3) if departmental averages are fallacious, national averages are even more so, whether based on aggregate data or on survey results. Keywords
