Abstract
Ovaries from female Outbred strain mice do not respond to exogenous PMSG [pregnant mare''s serum gonadotropin] during days 5-10 of life. From birth to 5 days PMSG increases the number of growing follicles per ovary. In contrast, treatment with PMSG from birth until 10 days of age maintains but does not increase the response relative to that found at 5 days of age. Therefore 2 critical developmental periods were identified during the 1st wave of ovarian follicular growth in the infant mouse. These data are discussed in relation to previous studies which found the infant mouse ovary either refractory or sensitive to exogenous gonadotropin.
