THE NATURAL HISTORY OF WEST NILE FEVER I. CLINICAL OBSERVATIONS DURING AN EPIDEMIC IN ISRAEL1

Abstract
Clinically, West Nile fever consists mainly of a brief pyrexia with variable glandular swelling and skin rash. Of 70 patients studied the results of clinical observations were compared with virological and serological findings. Very good correlation was found between clinical and laboratory findings. West Nile virus was isolated from peripheral blood of 13 patients. In 86% of clinically typical cases, West Nile infection was proved by virus isolation and/or serological methods. Most clinically atypical cases gave negative laboratory results for West Nile virus. Occurrence of "abortive" infections with West Nile virus has been confirmed serologically.
