Abstract
Administration of barbiturates before the critical period on the day of proestrus in the rat blocks release of the ovulatory surge of LH [leuteinizing hormone] from the pituitary. Pentobarbital or bar-bital was administered on the day before proestrus in an attempt to block the gonadotrophin secretion necessary for ovarian steroid release; no consistent blockade was seen. Two functionally separable systems for releasing gonadotrophin (particularly LH) exist: 1 is responsible for ovarian steroid secretion and is not susceptible to barbiturate blockade; the 2nd induces ovulation and is susceptible to such blockade. Keywords
