Effects of Barbiturate Injection on the Day Before Proestrus in the Rat

Abstract
Administration of barbiturates before the critical period on the day of proestrus in the rat blocks release of the ovulatory surge of LH [leuteinizing hormone] from the pituitary. Pentobarbital or bar-bital was administered on the day before proestrus in an attempt to block the gonadotrophin secretion necessary for ovarian steroid release; no consistent blockade was seen. Two functionally separable systems for releasing gonadotrophin (particularly LH) exist: 1 is responsible for ovarian steroid secretion and is not susceptible to barbiturate blockade; the 2nd induces ovulation and is susceptible to such blockade.
