Abstract
To the Editor: —Since to the best of my knowledge this subject, which has important ophthalmologic manifestations, has not yet made its way into the ophthalmic literature, and because I believe some of your readers will be interested in the papers cited, I would like to call your attention to the interesting African lymphoma problem. During the past four years Professor Davies, Mr. Burkitt, and their associates at the Makerere College Medical School and Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, have published a series of reports1-3,5,7,8describing a remarkable neoplastic disease with unique epidemiologic features. This new tumor is of interest to ophthalmologists because the affected patients often present with proptosis and chemosis, and frequently they are seen first in the Eye Clinic. The neoplasm is a lymphosarcoma with a predominantly extralymphnodal origin. The maxilla and mandible are sites of predilection. Some of the tumors arising in the maxilla produceKeywords
