Abstract
A single crystal disc of a Pt 52 at. % Co alloy has been prepared and magnetization and crystalline anisotropy measurements have been carried out with the specimen in the disordered cubic and in the ordered tetragonal phase. The easy directions of magnetization in the cubic phase are 〈111〉; the anisotropy constant being ≅ −6 × 105 erg/cm3. The tetragonal phase is strongly uniaxial with [001] as the easy direction and an anisotropy constant of ≅2 × 107 erg/cm3. The magnetization loop properties of the mixed, magnetically hard, phase have been nieasured from room temperature down to 77°K and the coercivity was found to vary linearly with temperature. The remanent magnetization loop has been analysed in detail and shown to be consistent with a simple domain wall model. Keywords
