SUBSTITUTION OF "LECITHIN" FOR RAW PANCREAS IN THE DIET OF THE DEPANCREATIZED DOG

Abstract
In depancreatized dogs on insulin (no. not stated; 4 reported), cane sugar and lean beef muscle diet permitted survival for more than a yr. (presumably "in- definitely") without pancreatic enzymes so long as frequent doses of egg yolk "lecithin" were administered; this lecithin regularly and promptly alleviated the characteristic syndrome which the authors attribute largely to failure of liver function. Vitamin deficiency appeared incidentally, but probably was not a cause of the liver condition. The beneficial effects of lecithin on the liver function were corroborated by necropsy findings.
