Abstract
Previous work has shown that chronic treatment of the plateaued adult rat With purified pituitary growth hormone or with crude alkaline extracts of anterior lobe tissue results in an initial period of growth followed by reduced growth and eventual development of a new weight plateau even though dosage either per rat or per kilogram is unchanged. In this experiment 2 rats were treated with an extract of rat pituitaries representing 25 mg/rat/day wet weight of anterior lobe tissue. Each of these rats had a growth curve essentially identical to the curves of each of 142 rats in experiments using bovine pituitary extracts or purified growth hormone. Ten and 20 day assays fail to show an important difference in magnitude of growth response to comparable doses of pH 10.5 extracts of rat and beef pituitaries. Keywords
