Abstract
The Rayleigh scattering by a dense medium composed of anisotropic units is calculated directly from Maxwell’s equations in a dielectric. The true scattered field is given by the fluctuations in the total effective field in the medium. A purely classical calculation gives the correct dependence of the scattered intensity on the refractive index of the medium. Keywords
