Abstract
Scherer, W. F. and B. A. Pancake (Cornell Univ. Medical College, New York, N. Y. 10021). Cross-protection among viruses of the Venezuelan equine encephalitis complex in hamsters. Amer. J. Epid., 1970, 97: 225–229.—Cross-protection occurred among viruses of the Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) virus complex in hamsters. Pixuna and the Fort Detrick, attenuated VEE virus vaccine inapparently infected hamsters and protected them against disease and death from subcutaneous challenge by VEE or Mucambo viruses. It is suggested that to simplify arbovirus nomenclature, VEE, Mucambo, and Pixuna viruses be considered VEE viruses, subtypes 1, 2 and 3, rather than separately named entities. Keywords
