Abstract
The cause of thickness variation in ignimbrite cooling units with relatively uncomplicated post-depositional histories can be determined by plotting thickness against degree of welding and basal elevation at a number of vertical sections. This method may be used where only drillhole data are available, as illustrated by the Whakamaru Ignimbrite in the Kinleith area (Central North Island, New Zealand). Keywords
