Abstract
The cause of thickness variation in ignimbrite cooling units with relatively uncomplicated post-depositional histories can be determined by plotting thickness against degree of welding and basal elevation at a number of vertical sections. This method may be used where only drillhole data are available, as illustrated by the Whakamaru Ignimbrite in the Kinleith area (Central North Island, New Zealand).
