MISSOURI STREAM TEAMS: VOLUNTEER EFFORTS TO IMPROVE WATER QUALITY

Abstract
The Missouri Stream Team Program was launched in 1987 and currently has over 1,300 groups who act as stewards for Missouri streams. The program is coordinated by three state agencies but the real work is conducted by volunteers. Stream Team activities are planned by individual Stream Teams, and therefore, a wide variety of activities are performed. The most common activities are litter pickups and water quality monitoring. The water quality monitoring program includes physical, chemical and biological monitoring. Three levels of training and an introductory workshop are available to train volunteers to collect water quality data. Cedar Creek in Lee's Summit Missouri is discussed as an example of Stream Team activities.
