Abstract
The morphology and histology of the alimentary canal and associated glands of mature larva of M. trapezalis have been described. The oesophageal valve is formed by the foregut invagination into the midgut and appears to act as a press. Regenerative, columnar and goblet cells have been observed in midgut epithelium. A thin-walled tube secreted by the anterior midgut cells represents the peritrophic membrane which is two-layered. Histologically, the hindgut has been differentiated into six different regions. The chitinous intima of foregut and hindgut is doublelayered. The labial and mandibular glands are of typical lepidopteran type.
