EFFECT OF PROLACTIN ON SPECIFIC OESTRADIOL RECEPTORS IN THE RAT UTERUS

Abstract
In vivo effects of [ovine] prolactin on the specific estradiol receptors in the rat uterus were examined. Short-term or long-term administration of prolactin failed to alter specific estradiol binding when compared with their respective controls. The possibility that prolactin may prime the uterus so that a subsequent estradiol injection will further enhance the synthesis of specific estrogen receptors over the controls not treated with prolactin was tested. While there is an increase in the estradiol receptors in response to pretreatment, long-term prolactin treatment did not augment this effect. The results confirm the recent findings of Vignon and Rochefort (1976) that prolactin does not alter estrogen receptor levels in the rat uterine tissue.
