Abstract
The Zeeman effect of the near ultraviolet absorption bands (B2←1Σg+) of CS2 has been studied at high resolution. It has been found that the magnetic moment in the excited state increases linearly with the rotational quantum number J and reaches a value in excess of one Bohr magneton at J=50. The Zeeman effect can be understood if it is assumed that the observed B2 state is one component of a 3A2 state in which the triplet splitting is large. It is shown that this interpretation is consistent with the observed spectrum and with the excited states expected for CS2. The rotational structures of a number of bands have been analyzed and the rotational constants are given. Keywords
