Natural Radiation and Radioactivity in China

Abstract
Survey programmes to study terrestrial gamma radiation are described, and the results of independent measurements indoors, outdoors and over roads are summarised and examined with regard to their differences. The ratio of the absorbed dose rate in air indoors to outdoors is found to average 1.5 for about 53,000 measurement sites. A much lower radiation level is observed in trains than elsewhere, and this results in a reduction of 76 man-Sv in the population dose. Preliminary results of measurements of radon levels in dwellings and underground structures, and of radioactivity in soil, building materials and water are presented and discussed.
