Neurilemmomas of Vagus Nerve in the Neck

Abstract
NEURILEMMOMAS of the vagus nerve in the neck are so rare that each case is worthy of record. The number of cases reported is not accurately known. In the 2 most recent reports, the total number found is stated to be 11 by one investigator and 21 by the other.1,2Since these growths are usually difficult to diagnose preoperatively, any aid in calling attention to this diagnosis would be extremely helpful to the physician. In this paper, 2 additional cases are presented which demonstrate a dramatic physical sign, apparently specific, for the diagnosis of these vagal tumors. Histogenesis Prior to the turn of the century, these tumors were poorly understood and were classified under a variety of names which added to the confusion (neurofibroma, perineurial fibroblastoma, peripheral glioma, spindle cell tumor).
