Abstract
EXCLUDING carcinoma of the lower lip, carcinomas of the anterior two thirds of the tongue constitute the largest single group of malignant tumors of the oral cavity.1 , 2 Although various methods of treatment have been employed in previous series, there has been general agreement on an approximate overall five-year survival rate of 25 per cent.3 4 5 This figure is derived from the analysis of large groups of patients treated before the major advances in surgery (anesthesia, antibiotics and blood replacement) and radiation therapy6 and before extensive cancer education and widespread availability of medical and dental care.7 It is the purpose of this . . .
