Abstract
The term sliding friction is used nowadays in many different meanings and covers many phenomena which physically differ from each other in a conspicuous manner; thus it makes no sense to discuss the mechanism of friction in this wide meaning. It was suggested [1] to reserve the term friction for the phenomenon studied by Leonardo da Vinci, Coulomb, and so on, and to employ the expression resistance to sliding as the all-embracing term, but this suggestion has not been followed. The main phenomena belonging to resistance to sliding are outlined in this chapter, and their variety will, no doubt, be obvious to the reader. Keywords
